I grew up showing horses, by the time I was 15 ( and could legally drive in the state of la back then) i was taking care of 40 head of horses every christmas for 3 weeks while the barn owner and her family went to vermont to visit her mother. ( 10 stall horses, 10 horses that came in to be fed and and another 20 lesson horses ) I did everything from cleaning stalls, making sure if there was ice that it was gone from buckets and troughs etc before and after school) There were adults with horses, but I was the one up at 3 to do it before school.. etc
I flew into Alabama on christmas day when I was 13 to work with the trainer I trained with. I made a mistake i told his dad ,"yeah it was an ok flight." i was then told to do a hundred pushups, sweep the barn aisle and pick up outside the barn for mouthing off. I still hold ( almost 30 years later) the farm record for vaults/ pushups given as punishment.. I could have had a lot less but when you did something good you were given the question how many do you deserve to have taken off, and my answer would always be 5-10 rather than the whole amount. why am i telling you this, because the best men that i have worked for have been those that were downright harsh in their demeanor at times.. but they know their job, know how to do it well and safely and if you earn their respect you have earned for more than any money in the world. THey are hard but they do it for a reason, not to be a bully but to instill a work ethic, safety, etc and because you are their to do it their way, not yours. If you can not take it get out of the fire, but if you can it is always worth it.
I guess what it boils down to is this, most people today are not taught to shut up and listen that someone might know better, that there is a time and a place to question but in the middle of something going on is probably not it.. and if there is a real reason to question and you have not done it a thousand times before that it will carry far more weight. The men and women that I refer to are those, that in whatever profession, can be seen as hard, tough, maybe even nasty at times, but if you ever watch, they inspire trust, loyalty, and they do their jobs very well and usually with a very high level of safety. I have seen them in the military, around horses, on fishing boats, pilots and firemen( rescuers as well) , there is a reason, something can and will kill you in all of those things.. and you want to be with the person that will get you home, will inspire you to have faith when you are worried that you might not make it . He is no more a bully than the fine men and women that I trained with and later worked for. It is his way or the highway and that is what most people can not and do not like and cause them to say he is a bully.
just my thought
