| Maybe they have heaters in th e weelhouse but anymay I think the captain feel a little bit the pressure that his crew's life is in his hand so he maybe ignores the cold if there is cold inthere. |

| Pressure.. Oh, I agree with all of you who feel that staying warm and dry in the wheelhouse is definitely outweighed by the pressure of all the decisions the captain must make. It is on him to make the boat pay or not..every trip..and each of them knows it. I disagree that the others do all the work while the captain just sits in the wheelhouse. To get to be captain, they all put in their share of decktime over many years and know what that's like. Also, every single decision is on their shoulders; where to fish, how long to soak the pots, when to stop and give the guys a rest (especially if they are on the crab right then), when to stop and chop ice..everything. The waiting line for a job on the Northwestern is very long, I have been told, and it has to be because Sig unfailingly comes in top-dollar per deckhand for a given season. As Edgar said..since their father stopped fishing and Sig took over for him, it's always been Sig in the wheelhouse for crabbing and, to quote Edgar, "I wouldn't have it any other way." I know Edgar takes the NW out in the crab offseason for traditional fishing for cod, etc off Puget Sound, but it's the crab seasons that are the toughest in weather, work and decisions and bring in the biggest paychecks to crews with the most skilled captains. It's lonely in that wheelhouse, and when some other deckhand is asked to sit a watch so the captain can get a little sleep, they feel it and most say they couldn't take just sitting there, with the pressure of waiting to see if the pots come up full or not..they would much rather be on deck doing the fishing. I think that anyone who thinks that being captain is a 'cushy' job is seriously underestimating what that position entails..and he doesn't get any more sleep than anyone else on the boat, either..in fact, he may get less because of the constant worrying about where to fish, calculating how much crab they have in the tanks, worrying about weather conditions and all of the other miriad things there are to decide in that lonely wheelhouse. All of the captains deserve the respect they are due..this is a tough, tough job and they have all paid their dues. Caitie
