What is a permalink?

Seems to be something new, called a permalink, right next to the post number in the right hand corner of each post. It points to a different link address than the post number.

Whats the difference between the two links, and which should we use?

Permalink is a link to a particular thread/post if you want to refer to it. For example, you are talking to someone in chat, and you ask if they have seen the latest in the picture it NW style thread. They say they haven't, you can use the permalink to that thread/post to take them directly to that particular post.

Hmm, so the link that you get from just the post number does that also.

So what's the difference between the address you get from the post number, and the address from permalink?

Run your mouse over the two, and you'll see the different addresses in your browser. . .

I noticed that, thanks for asking, thanks for explaining. (Wonder what else has changed?)

Not sure how Patrick has the forum set up. But some of the forums I mod, and the ones I admin, have a archive/backup. So I imagine one is linking to the backup/archive.

Actually the permalink is an SEO method of letting the search engines index read the forums better. So each post looks like a webpage basically rather than a PHP?(POSTID) application.
