Hi FVNW fans. Greetings from the Pacific NW. Just in case you think it's neat to live here, it's 59 degrees and rainy ... in August. But I'm a native, and I'll take rainy, nasty weather any day. Love it.
And I love Deadliest Catch, of course. It seems like the Bering Sea is one of the last few places where if you can't do the job, you don't get the job. Not a lot of micro-management or HR complications on a crab boat. Wouldn't that be nice? Bummer that I get desperately seasick on 1' seas ... among other shortcomings.
God bless the patch, though (the seasickness patch). I love to fish. Cross your fingers, I'll be fishing for Chinook and Coho this weekend on the Columbia River. It's a far cry from what the Hansen's do, but I've got my own Grundens at least.
I've never seen the Northwestern in person, but have occasionally seen the Maverick when we've fished out of Warrenton, OR. For me, it would be a little disconcerting to see these guys in person. I'm really happy for the success they're seeing because of Deadliest Catch. Growing up in Oregon, I've seen the fishing industry devastated, and families along with it. Too bad they can't stick labels on their catch so we know which boat it came from when we buy Opilio at the supermarket, eh?
And I was intimidated by the blank message box ...
I really want to know two things:
1. Do these guys ever fish for fun? Like with a fishing pole? Or is water the last thing they want to see away from "work"?
1. What's with Sten Skaar's shiner in After the Catch, episode 2 (I think)? It was the yellow, argyle sweater episode. There's no way I was the only one who noticed.
Ciao!

Can't say I envy you the rain, but I'd love your temperatures! My family thought I was nuts moving to NC from Canada. The temperatures don't get a whole lot hotter than they do at home and the humidity is just as miserable, but summer lasts a whole lot longer here. On the plus side, I never have to shovel snow and the only time I need a winter coat is for trips home over the Christmas holidays.
Glad to hear that the patch works for your seasickness. Good luck with the fishing!
Nice intro! I get you on the rain thing (Seattle native here, but now a sun belt resident).
The Hansens have a small boat that they have used for sport fishing. I believe you will find that information in the Discovery chat transcripts from last year, or the year before. (Sig Hansens's chat, not Edgar.)
Being a sports fisherwoman who long ago worked in the charter industry in Westport, I remembered that.
